Hands On
Like many entrepreneurs, Ken Lopez has difficulty
delegating. But it's not because he's unwilling; he's just forgetful.
"I couldn't remember the specifics of what I had assigned, when
I had assigned it for, and whom I had assigned it to," says the
CEO of Animators at Law, a $5-million legal-graphics company. A veteran
entrepreneur speaking to Lopez's CEO peer group gave him some simple
advice: every time you delegate something, record the task, the employee,
and the deadline on your calendar. Lopez now routinely logs such information
in his Palm handheld and sets his Palm calendar to display pop-up reminders
five days before each deadline. "Now not only do I follow up on
everything, but everyone knows I'm going to follow up," he says.
